From a specific formula to a general method

A square’s area is side × side: A = b2. Length × width, or A = l × b, covers every rectangle—including squares. The square formula remains correct: it is the special case where length and width are equal.

What if Carnot is only part of the picture?

Could thermodynamic cycle theory make a similar shift? In this analogy, the classical Carnot formulas play the role of side × side: they determine reversible heat-engine efficiency and heat-pump and refrigeration coefficients of performance (COPs) for cycles exchanging heat at two constant temperature levels.

CarnotX proposes fully operationalizing the established Clausius reversible-cycle equality, together with energy balance and explicit qualification conditions, into a general method for process-specific reversible-cycle benchmarking. That method would play the role of length × width, encompassing the Carnot case and extending to configurations with multiple or continuously varying heat-exchange temperatures, subject to those conditions.

The ambition is to make Clausius the starting point for a broader framework, while retaining the Carnot formulas within their exact domain. The analogy illustrates that ambition; the derivations and independent scientific assessment must establish the method’s actual scope and added value.

Challenge the Theory You Learned. A dark green square is shown within a wider turquoise rectangle, labelled side × side and length × width. What if Carnot is only part of the picture?
The square is itself a rectangle with equal sides: l = b. The analogy concerns a special case within a broader method, rather than the addition of separate areas.

Independent scientific assessment

The proposal outlines a workshop to examine a proposed operationalization of the established Clausius reversible-cycle equality, together with energy balance and specified heat-exchange trajectories, into a qualified method for process-specific reversible-cycle benchmarking.

The intended programme connects thermodynamic science and engineering with relevant physics and astronomy expertise. It addresses comparison with existing methods, assumptions and qualification conditions, representative cycle cases, and possible implications for research, engineering and education.

What the proposal covers

  • The central scientific question and scope.
  • The proposed interdisciplinary programme and participant expertise.
  • Independent assessment, expected outcomes and follow-up questions.
  • Possible scientific, industrial, educational and publishing contributions.

Current status. The proposal has been submitted to the Lorentz Center. Assessment by its scientific team is expected over the coming months. The scientific programme and organizing team are being further developed. 2027 is the target workshop year; acceptance and scheduling are pending. The workshop is intended to assess the proposed method, with its conclusions remaining open.

Who may be interested?

Researchers and prospective organizers in thermodynamics, relevant physics and astronomy disciplines; industrial researchers contributing application questions; educators and academic publishers considering implications for teaching and literature; and organizations interested in discussing sponsorship.

Participation, sponsorship and any associated visibility arrangements require separate discussion. Requesting the proposal does not confirm a place, a partnership or access to the Formal Core.
